How to prep for your next hair and makeup appointment…
Everything your hair and makeup artist wants your to know before your next appointment
Hydrate your skin!!!
Makeup can’t change your skin texture, but your home care routine can.
That sounds harsh, I know. Makeup does not last well on dry skin, the reason being is that foundation is mostly made up of water. If your skin is dehydrated or dry it will suck all of the water out of your foundation and you will be left with powdery looking pigment on your face.
How can you stop this from happening?
Your makeup artist will prep your skin before applying makeup and they should be able to tell your skin type by looking at it. Most makeup artists will also ask you about your skin to make sure the are prepping accordingly.
This prep is made easier if we know you are looking after your skin at home as well. There are a few non-negotiable skin care items that everyone needs to make sure their skin is hydrated at the minimum.
These are:
Hyaluronic Acid Serum: HA naturally occurs in our skin. It is a sugar molecule that holds onto 1000x its weight in water, keeping your skin plump and structured.
Moisturiser based on your skin type: Not all moisturisers are the same. Someone with dry skin will need a moisturiser with oils in it, someone with oily skin might prefer something more water based, and combo might need something in between. It’s important you are selecting your moisturiser based on YOUR skin and not what your friend raves about.
SPF: Sun is the biggest cause of aging. Sun damage will stop your skin cells from functioning properly. Use your SPF daily.
Shampoo your hair TWICE!!!
(Preferably on the same day as your hair and makeup appointment)
We have all heard the old wives tale that dirty hair is better for styling. This is straight up incorrect. There is no amount of dry shampoo that will hide oily hair.
Make sure you are double shampooing your hair the morning of your hair and makeup appointment. Only condition the mids to ends and avoid the roots. Once you are finished washing your hair please avoid putting any styling products in, these can make your hair heavy and harder to ensure your style holds.
Lash Lifts and Extensions
Please don’t do it…
On behalf of all Makeup Artists, if you want us to put false lashes on, do not get a lash lift before your appointment. Lashes will not work with a lash lift at all. We have all had the one client who has had a butchered lash lift that we physically could do nothing to make better. By all means, if you don’t want false lashes, go for it! But if you want a full set o fluttery lashes, avoid a lash lift at all costs.
Extensions Yes or NO?
Every makeup artist has a different take. I personally don’t mind if a client has lash extensions so long as they are fresh. The main thing to keep in mind is you need to make sure you clean them properly after having makeup on them. If you don’t this can lead to infection and skin irritation.
I personally won’t put individual lashes on top of extensions if they are gappy, it is too hard for the client to get the glue off their lashes when they take their makeup off (not to mention their lash tech might hunt us down and murder us). So keep in mind, if your extensions are patchy, we cant do anything to fix them.
When it comes down to it, if you asked me if I prefer a client to have extensions or not, I would always say no extensions is better.
Waxing and Dermaplaning
When is the best time to book your hair removal appointments?
We all know you want to look your best for a big event, and for some people that means fresh brows and/or dermaplaning your entire face.
I am all for this if it makes you confident! But make sure all hair removal is done at least 5 days before your makeup appointment. Otherwise your makeup literally wont stick to your face.
With Love,
Jess xx
